Writer Problems, Writer's Life

Day Two of the New Rule

As you recall, I started a new rule yesterday. And yesterday it worked. I got my words in and then I able to check Facebook whenever I wanted. and it felt great to have my writing done early in the day. And if I was going to pick a day to cheat, yesterday would have been an easy one. I was in for 4 am at my other job. So I could have very easily made the excuse/promise that I would write later. But I didn’t. I spent the time before I punched in reading.

Today is proving to be a challenge. I’ve got a lot of life things on my mind and I’m having a hard time wanting to crank out 500 words. In the meantime, Facebook is looking at me with pitiful eyes. But, I’m trying to follow the rule and not look at it. So far, I haven’t. Pinterest on the other hand…let’s just say I’m taking baby steps and eliminating one distraction at a time.

I know I shouldn’t wait for inspiration, desire, etc to hit, but I’m having a hard time focusing. My muse is distracted with something else. Any suggestions for tempting her to come back? Maybe coffee would help?

On a side note, my cover artist finished reading my 1st book, and she and I are getting together next Monday to discuss what I want her to do. I should probably figure that out soon. I’ve got a rough idea, and by rough I mean I know what colors I want the background and title to be.

Well, I should get back to staring at my notebook and trying to get some words written.

New Rule

I need to write consistently, every day. I haven’t done that since last year. Yikes, I know. So I’m making a new rule.

No Facebook until my words are written.

If I want to make writing my career, and I do, then I need to start treating it like one. I’ve tried paying myself, coming up with a reward system, just doing it,etc. and nothing has seemed to stick. So starting Monday, June 19, this new rule will take effect. If you see me online ask me to take a picture of my word count and the date. I’m setting it at 500 for right now, hoping to ease into a higher one as the weeks go by. (I’ll let you know on increase days). On that note, I have to get writing.

NaNoWriMo is Over–Now What?

Well fellow writers, November is over. I hope your writing committment went well. Mine did. Well sort of. It was not too fun playing catch up towards then end, but I somehow figured it out.

I can proudly say that I wrote 50,017 words. It’s not a lot over the minimum like some people were able to do, but it’s still over. It’s too bad that I’m going to be deleting a good chunk of them because I finished the story before I hit the word count.

I took yesterday off of writing. I wasn’t even allowed to write a grocery list. Not one word. And around lunch time I felt like I needed to be writing something. I stayed strong and I didn’t do it. However I felt like I’ve been away from you guys for too long, and I couldn’t resist the urge to write something.

Now, this month I’m going to spend reading mostly, and once I hear back from my beta readers in January I’m going to start revisiting my first novel.

Writer Problems

Good News, Bad News

I started writing again yesterday. I wrote 553 words in my notebook and then we decided to go to bed. Then I typed up 448 words on my word counter app, which would have brought me up to 1001 words.

The plan was to copy and paste the text into another app so i could save it. So I selected it all. Then I accidentally pushed the y button instead of the copy button, deleting everything and replacing it with the letter y. And I couldn’t undo it.

I’m counting it as hitting my word count, but now I have to rewrite it today before I can move on with the story. I may have learned my lesson about using my phone to hit my word count.

Has this, or something equivalent, happened to you? It’s frustrating isn’t it? I guess it was ok because I didn’t like where the story was going anyway.

I Almost Didn’t Get My Writing Done Today

I’m getting in the habit of writing everyday that way come November I shouldn’t be too shocked by the consistency. I’m not writing 1667 words everyday, but I’m building my way up to it.

Well tonight was the night that I almost broke my 24 (now 25) day streak of writing in a row. Although to be fair I’ve written everyday since August 28th except for one. And I gave myself the day off. Yeah that was a mistake as it was hard to get back into writing the next day. So my lesson was learned. No days off until December.

So back to the story. By the time my husband was ready to go to bed I had only written about half of the words that I needed to. He wanted me to come to bed with him (understandably, I sleep better with him next to me too). So I almost didn’t finish. Almost. I remembered that I have this nifty app on my phone that let’s me type notes (I’m actually using it right now so I don’t use up all my data, I’ll talk about that issue later) and before I went to bed I downloaded a word counter, which is an even niftier app.

Ultimate Notepad. This is the app I use to write my blog posts and tonight, about 500 words.

So I was able to write in bed with the lights off (my vision is already terrible) and not only did I hit my word count for the day. I went 82 words over it! And my story is almost done. I have to try and squeeze 1800 more words out if it so I don’t stop mid-story to prepare my NaNoWriMo project next week. I don’t think that’s going to happen though. Maybe I’ll start my preparations a day earlier than I intended.

Bullet Journal : Week One Update

So this past week is the first time I’ve hit my word count every day! It’s been way too long since I’ve written consistently and I love getting back into the habit again. There were a few days where I didn’t think I was going to make it, but I somehow managed it. Not only did I hit my goal of 3000 words, but I crushed it by writing 800 words more.

Motivation page. Check out the word count.

Anyway, I’ve decided to increase my word count goal by 100 every week between now and November so I can be better prepared for NANOWRIMO.

I used my “word of the week in both of the stories that I wrote this week too. (For those of you who are wondering,  it was approbation, and it means approval. Next week my word is misanthrope, which means a hater of humankind). I’m slowly building my vocabulary.

Oh, I almost forgot, I came up with a new story idea too. (It might be a novel but I haven’t really played around with it yet). I was talking to a friend of mine and he inadvertently gave me the idea. I’m not sure if I want to say what it is just yet in case it doesn’t work out.

That’s really about all I’ve got, I just wasn’t quite done writing yet but I’m between stories at the moment. I hope your week was as productive if not more so than mine was.

Word Count

I’ve been writing. I took the advice of jrhandleyblog and I stopped trying to micromanage all of my characters and I just wrote. And it felt amazing!

I’m going to tell you what I did but first I have to figure out what I want my daily word count to be. (Don’t worry, I won’t tell you everyday how many words I’ve written, maybe I will weekly or once or twice a month I haven’t decided yet). Anyway I could make my goal 500 words, which is about 5 pages in my little notebook,

My little notebook. I can get about 142 words per page. I am a Star Wars nerd by the way. We can talk about that later if you’d like.
or I can make it 1000, which I’ve been able to do in the past so I know it’s obtainable. However I’m still sort of recovering from wrist surgery (I had carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists, but it was taken care of in May) so I don’t want to push too hard. Maybe I’ll shoot for somewhere in between.

Anyway, tonight I wrote 808 words. It’s the most I’ve written in one sitting since before May. I knocked out 5 note cards and I decided to move one and add another.

I know I skipped number 5, I decided to move it. I’m really loving the ease of this kind of “outline,” and I think I’m definitely going to do it again.

So regardless of my word count goal, I’d say tonight was very productive. Now I just have to get back in the habit of writing everyday again.

What do you like to do to form a new habit? Also, what do you think about my word count? (Keep in mind that I work 40 hours a week also, so it has to be obtainable).
