Pre-publishing Check List

I’m almost done editing my novel for the last time. (I know, I’ve been saying that for a long time now, but I mean it this time). So what should I be doing while my cover artist is working her magic? 

I’ve got a list of things that I need to do before I got publish, but I just want to make sure that I’m not forgetting anything. 

  1. Get a cover. I’m working on that. 
  2. Write a synopsis. I’m working on this too.
  3. Set up a newsletter. I’m not sure about this. Is it necessary?
  4. Update blog/Facebook page with my pen name. I’ll be doing this in the next couple days/weeks.
  5. Set up Twitter account. I’ve done this, and once I change my name here I’ll let you know what it is.
  6. Advertise/Promote. I’ll work on this once I have a cover.

What am I forgetting? I’m sure there’s something.

Final Draft…Again…For Real…I Hope

Does this happen to anyone else? You have a final version that you’re relatively happy with so you give it to people to read and then they give you feedback to make it even better. So then you go and make a final folder on your laptop, you fix the novel and then you give it to other people. And then more feedback. Does thisbcucle ever end?!

I met with my cover artist today, and it was a productive meeting. We didn’t actually talk about my cover though. At least not in very much detail. I told her how big I wanted it and what two colors to play around with. And on my way home I thought of a font that I want her to use…I should probably tell her that.

Instead we talked about changes in my novel that probably should be made, or at least thought about. 
So it’s back to the laptop again. Sigh. Oh well, we actually came up with some brilliant ideas that I’m looking forward to writing. One of them being my prologue. (I know what you’re thinking about a prologue, but it’s necessary and it’s going to tie in with my epilogue and maybe a few sections throughout, I haven’t quite decided yet). I basically get to rewrite it again. But it will actually work out better because then I get to write a novella that flushes out my current prologue. (I don’t want to give away too much so hopefully that wasn’t confusing.)

She also solved several of my other issues that my husband and I couldn’t figure out how to fix. In short, my cover artist is amazing.

Well, I’m off to decipher my notes.

Day Two of the New Rule

As you recall, I started a new rule yesterday. And yesterday it worked. I got my words in and then I able to check Facebook whenever I wanted. and it felt great to have my writing done early in the day. And if I was going to pick a day to cheat, yesterday would have been an easy one. I was in for 4 am at my other job. So I could have very easily made the excuse/promise that I would write later. But I didn’t. I spent the time before I punched in reading. 

Today is proving to be a challenge. I’ve got a lot of life things on my mind and I’m having a hard time wanting to crank out 500 words. In the meantime, Facebook is looking at me with pitiful eyes. But, I’m trying to follow the rule and not look at it. So far, I haven’t. Pinterest on the other hand…let’s just say I’m taking baby steps and eliminating one distraction at a time.

I know I shouldn’t wait for inspiration, desire, etc to hit, but I’m having a hard time focusing. My muse is distracted with something else. Any suggestions for tempting her to come back? Maybe coffee would help?

On a side note, my cover artist finished reading my 1st book, and she and I are getting together next Monday to discuss what I want her to do. I should probably figure that out soon. I’ve got a rough idea, and by rough I mean I know what colors I want the background and title to be.

Well, I should get back to staring at my notebook and trying to get some words written.

New Rule

I need to write consistently, every day. I haven’t done that since last year. Yikes, I know. So I’m making a new rule.

No Facebook until my words are written. 

If I want to make writing my career, and I do, then I need to start treating it like one. I’ve tried paying myself, coming up with a reward system, just doing it,etc. and nothing has seemed to stick. So starting Monday, June 19, this new rule will take effect. If you see me online ask me to take a picture of my word count and the date. I’m setting it at 500 for right now, hoping to ease into a higher one as the weeks go by. (I’ll let you know on increase days). On that note, I have to get writing.

I Went to Visit my Bench

A couple years ago, my husband and I went to Maine to celebrate our anniversary. I would highly recommend going if you have the chance. Anyway, we went on a Stephen King tour, because my husband wanted to. I would also recommend that, but that’s not the point of mentioning it. So on the tour we stopped at this water tower type thing (that’s not what it was, but I can’t remember the actual word) where King wrote the book It. He sat on this bench and wrote. 

Fast forward to the next summer back in Wisconsin. I found my own bench to sit at and write. Actually, it’s more of a dock, but it’s the same idea. Well, I haven’t been to it in a long time, so I decided tok bike over to it and crank out a few hundred words. I packed my notebook and pen in  my backpack and then biked over there. My dock was occupied by a couple people fishing so I sat at a different one. (I can’t get my picture to upload. I’ll try again later).

Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay for as long as I would have liked. The humidity and the temperature for to me. (Its a whopping 84°  Fahrenheit). I know to some of you, it’s comfortable, but my not that blood likes it about 20 degrees cooler. I did get about 80 words done though, so it wasn’t a wasted trip. Now I’m back home sitting in the air conditioning and talking to you guys. Once I finish I’m going to get back to work.

I’ve Only Blogged Once this Month

After this post, it will be twice. I know June am just started, but I still feel bad about losing touch with you guys. So, starting tomorrow, I’m going to blog twice a week. Now I just have to come up with some topics.

So far, I’ve got:

  1. Reading Progress. I’ll update you on what I’m currently reading, how I like it, and what’s up next. I’ll probably post this once a month.
  2. Word Count. I’ll let you know how my current work in progress is going. Also, probably a once a month post.
  3. Short Story or Poem. This is just a way to add some variety to my blog. Also maybe a learning opportunity so I can get feedback on what works/doesn’t work. Once a month so I can get my books written. Don’t expect too much in the poetry realm as that’s not my forte. 
  4. Author Interviews. I’m still lukewarm on this idea. Unless any of you amazing writers might be interested.
  5. Book Review. Maybe I could pair this with my currently reading post. 

Do you guys have any other ideas? I need three more if I’m only going to post the bare minimum. I plan on posting about interesting writing experiences as they come up in addition to these topics.

I don’t want this to become a chore that I dread doing, and I definitely don’t want to bore you guys either. Do you have any recommendations for avoiding that?

Project ADD

I’ve got some serious focusing issues going on right now. I can’t seem to stick with one project through completion, and it’s driving me nuts.

Here’s the list of projects that I’ve got going on right now:

  1. My first novel. I’ve got it back from both editors. I’m kind of mad at one because he wants me to change the plot…again. 
  2. My second novel which I’m currently rewriting. I think it’s going better than originally written.
  3. My NaNoWriMo novel from last November needs to be edited. I’m looking forward to getting back into that one.
  4. I had an idea a while back about where the main character is a writer. I haven’t really developed it yet.
  5. Hubby and I are still (I think) writing one using the opening line that he gave me.
  6. I came up with an idea yesterday, while visiting my parents, that I’d like to develop.

Maybe I’ll work on a different one every day of the week. Or I should just stop procrastinating and finish one thing at a time.

Just an Update

I realized that I haven’t blogged in forever and I didn’t want you guys to think I died or anything else catastrophic. So here’san update on what’s been going on in my life lately. 

My current novel just came back from one of my editors and my other editor is supposed to finish it up this weekend. Also, my cover artist is supposed to start working out it this weekend worst case. 

I started/restarted my 2nd novel on Friday. I’m about 2000ish words in so far and I still have no idea what’s going on. I’m just following my characters around and o serving what they’re up to. If things get too weird I’ll try and write up an outline or something that I won’t follow anyway. 

I’m going to start writing a query letter to small presses maybe on Friday. I think I’m going to recruit my husband for that endeavor. We’re going to be spending 5 hours in a car twice this weekend so I’ll have his undivided attention. Don’t tell him this devious plan.

Other than that, not too much is new and exciting by me. What’s new by you?

I’m Torn

I was all set to go the self-publishing route for my novel, and then my husband started reading/editing it and he said that I should try and resubmit it to agents and go the traditional publishing route. My husband keeps telling me that it’s good enough to try and find an agent, and that it is 110% better than it was two years ago, and I trust his judgement, but at the same time, he’s biased. He told me earlier, that he would have told me if it was garbage, but I really don’t think he would. I don’t think he could even if he wanted to.

There are pros and cons to each option, so I’m using you guys and my way of laying out what those would be. Let me know if you think of/know anything that I’m forgetting. Also, if my understanding of how these things work is wrong, please let me know.

Self-Publishing Pros:

  1. I can publish what I want when I want to.
  2. I’m in complete control over how I want my book to look.
  3. I can use the people I want to, to make my cover, edit, and help with layouts.
  4. A lot of people have made the switch to e-readers, so I would have that market.

Self-Publishing Cons:

  1. I have to do all the marketing/self-promotion myself.
  2. The cost to print a book is ridiculous.
  3. I have to pay those people out of my own pocket to make my cover, edit, and help with layouts.
  4. It would be harder (but not impossible?) to get my book in stores.

Traditional Publishing Pros:

  1. My agent will do all the marketing for me.
  2. It would be easier to get my book out in stores.
  3. It will be easier to keep my identity a secret (I feel like Super-Man).
  4. They could probably better identify what my genre is. (I’m leaning toward, clean romance, fantasy, and new adult).

Traditional Publishing Cons:

  1. Query letters suck.
  2. Rejection.
  3. They will perhaps make changes to my book that I disagree with/don’t want to do.
  4. I would have to play by their rules, instead of making up my own, in regards to genre classification, deadlines, author events(?)

What would you do if you were in my shoes? Would you try and submit it to an agent, or would you just self-publish anyway? I really could go either way.

My Editor is Hard at Work

Well one of them is. I asked my husband to read my novel, just thinking that he would read it. Yeah, he’s making changes. I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or not. I’ll find out once he finishes.

I’m not complaining mind you, well at least not yet. If he decides that I need to make major plot changes then there may be some problems. On a side note, he just said it was very good! (Although he’s biased so I’m not sure if I should count it).

In the mean time, I’ve been working on all the technical stuff to include in my book. So far, I’ve got a first draft of my acknowledgements page, my dedication page, and my about the author page. (Thanks, JR for the help on that).
