I Figured Out What to Do

I went to work early today because it’s been snowing and I wasn’t sure how the roads were. (They were fine by the way).

I spent the hour that I had before my shift brainstorming how to build the relationship between my main characters. I’m happy to announce that I came up with a solution to it. I’m just to kill them both off amd then I won’t have to worry about it! Just kidding. That would be too easy and it would be the world’s shortest novel.

I spent an hour coming up with how to get my main characters to have a real relationship.

I don’t want to tell you just yet what I’m going to do in case I can’t get it to work when I sit down to actually write. Let’s just say there’s going to be a snowstorm in my novel. That’s probably cliché but I’m going with it for now. What can I say, I write what I know.

Why do Relationships have to be so Hard?

I’m not talking about mine, just to clarify. I don’t need those rumors to start. I’m talking about the relationship between my two main characters.

It has been brought to my attention by one of my beta readers that their relationship is unrealistic and progresses too fast. So now I’m tasked with making it more believable. The ultimate goal is for them to have a “forbidden love affair” type situation. Which they have, but I’ve got it starting in chapter 3. Which is way too soon considering they met about a week ago in novel time.

I’m probably over thinking it (like I do with a lot of other aspects of my writing). It doesn’t help that I’ve been working on this since about noon today. I’ve made a lot of progress which I’m very happy about, but now my brain is done for the night.

It also doesn’t help that I’m not good at flirting. Scratch that. I can’t flirt. I don’t know how to do it and now that I’ve been married for a little over 6 years I’m not sure if I want/need to learn how?

Please don’t flirt with me! My husband won’t like that too much (and I don’t blame him).

I need help building a relationship. I need help with the natural progression. Here’s a little background of my characters. He’s a college professor and she is one of his students (talk about forbidden romance). They shouldn’t be seen together in public, but they can’t help it.

Any and all help/suggestions are greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Well, I owe Myself $20

That’s right, I wrote 200 words the other day. I decided that’s about the most I can afford to pay myself every day, unfortunately. Oh well, it’s better than nothing. Now I just have to keep up with it.

Yesterday I came up with an idea for my novel that I’m not sure that I want/am able to do. The prologue takes place in France in the 1500’s, so I was thinking that I could/should write that in “old English.” This recent development might be due to reading Jane Eyre, which I’m loving, by the way. I’m not sure if it’s worth changing the prologue again though. That and I think I’m over thinking this whole process. For those of you who have read it, do you think it might be worth playing around with it, or should I just leave it?

I want this to be the last time that I make major changes so I’m taking my time going through it again. (Which is why I’m still rewriting the prologue…that and I’m lacking motivation). I need to just sit down and do it, and I’ve been saying that for awhile now, and I just haven’t done it. Sigh. Maybe I need to take things away from myself until I get my words done in addition to paying myself. I was really hoping that it wouldn’t come to this, but if that’s what I need to do, then so be it.

On the plus side, I’ve gotten a lot of reading done lately. Maybe that’s what I need to focus on to improve my craft. I read somewhere that if you’re not writing you should be reading. Maybe my subconscious is telling me that that’s what I need right now. Or it’s just an excuse for not writing.

Writer Problems

I haven’t written one word in over a week. Yikes!

Apparently my bullet journal isn’t working regarding that. (It is helping in a lot of other aspects of my life though so I’m not giving it up just yet). So now I need to come up with a different system.

A while back I got the idea to start paying myself. It sounds counter productive I know,  to write. I looked into the average cost per word and I did that. I think the reason I stopped was because I had wrist surgery and couldn’t write or do my “real job” to earn the money to pay myself. But now I’m back at work and recovered so I’m going to start doing it again.

This will hopefully also help with my financial goal of saving $500 a month. Which will help me buy a new laptop and other writing related items.

What do you do when you’re going through a phase of not writing?

Edit: I just did the math and in order to save $500/month I have to write less than 200 words a day. I can do that in my sleep.

Well, I Still Need to Learn Latin

But the library with the better foreign language section in my area is closed today. Got to live when it rains in January in Wisconsin. Oh well, now I have an excuse to go on Friday (not that I need one).

On a slightly different but still related note, I think I’m going to change the POV back to what it was originally.  I think that will be a more interesting/unique voice. I’m debating writing two versions of the story and have people tell me which one they like better. Any takers?

Editing My First Novel…Again

I heard back from most of my beta readers regarding my first novel. I’m still waiting for a few responses yet, but I can’t wait forever. So starting on Friday, I’m going to start reviewing what everyone had said and start the process of editing it, hopefully for the last time.

I’ve got a lot to think about and too many plot holes to fix/clarify, but that’s what I wanted my readers to find. I’m really looking forward to working on this project again. I haven’t seen it since last June, so it will be fresh in my mind too.

I’m kind of disappointed (in myself) with all the grammar/typos that they found, but I’m glad that somebody found them. I’d rather fix them now, than have them get sent off to an agent and not be taken seriously because I can’t use a comma (or something else dumb like that).

So thank you once again to all my beta readers, you’re all amazing!

I Need to Learn Latin

So I’ve been taking a break from editing one of my stories. (Really writing in general but we won’t get into that right now). Mainly because my adoring husband suggested that I rewrite the whole thing, and then I did, mostly, I’ve just got a few plot holes to fix and the ending to rework. That and I need to learn to say a couple of phrases in Latin, and I’ve just been lazy.

Depending on what the weather’s doing, I’m going to spend some much needed quality time at the library. We’re in the middle of a blizzard right now so I’m not sure how much time I’m going to spend there, as I have a few other errands to run and I have to somehow get to work. (I have movies to return which is the only reason I’m going in the first place).

I know what you’re probably thinking, “Why don’t you just Google the phrases you need?” That’s a good question with a couple of answers. The main one is we only have internet on our phones and my data usage is almost maxed out for the month. The other reason is that I like to get books from the library when I need to research something. It makes me feel more productive I guess.

What have you all been up to lately? Hopefully you’ve been accomplishing more than I have.

Reading Update

My Mom and I, on Christmas Eve, decided to read the same book at the same time. We’ve done this once before, and we read two books, but then we stopped. (I’m not really sure why, maybe she knows). So we read Dead Girls Don’t Blog by Pamela Frost Dennis (which was my choice) and now we’re reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë (her choice).

Dead Girls Don’t Blog was pretty good. I’m not really a mystery type person, but the title sounded intriguing so I got it on my Kindle. (I did a “free” search about blogging, hoping to get a few books on increasing readers, monetizing, and other helpful information. I’m a nerd, I know, and this was what came up.) I guess there’s a whole series by this author, but I’m too cheap/not sure if I liked them enough to buy them, even though my mom said she would get them for me.

Jane Eyre is ok. I stayed up late reading it last night and at first I wasn’t too sure about it, but it has gotten better. I don’t want to say too much because I’m further than my mom is and she reads this blog. I’m making the rounds of the Brontë sisters, so now I need to find something by Anne. Any recommendations?

Separate and apart from reading a book with my mom, I’m also reading Interview with the Vampire, by Anne Rice. So far I’m liking it, but I’m only 20 pages in. (I like to read a “real” book at work and a Kindle book at night, thus the two books going at the same time).  This wasn’t really my first choice, in fact I’m not even sure if it’s on my reading list, but I’m waiting for the library to e-mail me to tell me that the book I ordered is in.

What are you reading? I’m always open for interesting books!

Writing and Editing, Writing Contest

Happy New Year!

Well I didn’t get my story done in time for the writing contest deadline. Only because my husband decided that I needed to rewrite the whole thing.(And since I value his feedback/trust his judgment I decided to follow his advice). He basically wanted me to add a scene at the beginning and then change POV. I started doing all that and then I got distracted/lazy and I didn’t finish it. Oh well. By the time the next contest comes around it should be ready to go.

I’m also waiting to hear back from my beta readers so I can go through my first novel. Again. I’ve lost track of how my times I’ve gone through it. Hopefully this will be the last?!

Today is also the first time I’ve sat in my office this winter. I had plans to utilize the space in November, but it was too cold. (I do have a space heater but it isn’t quite enough I’m debating going back upstairs any minute).
