I Almost Didn’t Get My Writing Done Today

Almost.

I’m getting in the habit of writing everyday that way come November I shouldn’t be too shocked by the consistency. I’m not writing 1667 words everyday, but I’m building my way up to it.

Well tonight was the night that I almost broke my 24 (now 25) day streak of writing in a row. Although to be fair I’ve written everyday since August 28th except for one. And I gave myself the day off. Yeah that was a mistake as it was hard to get back into writing the next day. So my lesson was learned. No days off until December.

So back to the story. By the time my husband was ready to go to bed I had only written about half of the words that I needed to. He wanted me to come to bed with him (understandably, I sleep better with him next to me too). So I almost didn’t finish. Almost. I remembered that I have this nifty app on my phone that let’s me type notes (I’m actually using it right now so I don’t use up all my data, I’ll talk about that issue later) and before I went to bed I downloaded a word counter, which is an even niftier app.

Ultimate Notepad. This is the app I use to write my blog posts and tonight, about 500 words.

So I was able to write in bed with the lights off (my vision is already terrible) and not only did I hit my word count for the day. I went 82 words over it! And my story is almost done. I have to try and squeeze 1800 more words out if it so I don’t stop mid-story to prepare my NaNoWriMo project next week. I don’t think that’s going to happen though. Maybe I’ll start my preparations a day earlier than I intended.

Writer Problems

Typing vs. Handwriting

Last night I started typing up my short stories so I could get in the habit of typing again in preparation for NANOWRIMO. I haven’t typed anything since last April, and I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t miss it.

It might just have to do with my  word processing program (I’m currently using Microsoft Word). My fingers slip and I accidentally use the keyboard commands to underline, or highlight all the text. Earlier this morning I accidentally closed the program without saving my progress so I had to type it all again. (I was not too happy about that by the way).

I’m hoping that I don’t run into these problems come November, but I have a feeling that I will. However, I don’t really want to hand write 50,000 words either.

What writing program are you using and do you like it? Have you run into similar problems as I have?  I’ve heard good things about Scrivner, but I don’t want to invest in it just yet because I’m hoping to buy a new laptop next year.Or maybe I’ll just buy a typewriter and not have to worry about any of these problems. What would you recommend?

Exciting News Part 2

Still not as exciting as publishing a book, but it’s a close second.

The other day I was sent an email asking me to start writing for another blog. After talking it over with my husband, my mom and his, and my best friend, I decided to do it.

I know what you’re thinking, and no I’m not going to abandon you guys. This other blog encourages people to keep up their own blog too. So I will be attempting to maintain 2 blogs and continue to work on my fiction along with a full time job and a house to take care of. This will be interesting.

That’s pretty much it. Once I get started on that blog I’ll post a link to that one so you can follow me there too if you want. Im hopimg to not limit that blog to just writing, which is the main purpose of this one. I’m hoping to get started on that tomorrow. (I can’t post anything from my phone on that blog as of right now, which is why I’ll have to wait).

Anything newsy with you guys?

I’m Feeling Better About November

I’m going to start by saying that I spend way too much time on Pinterest and I apologize for all the references to that website.

That being said. I found this idea and I decided to personalize it. Basically what it is, is creating story sticks. You take any number of popsicle sticks (I used 60) and write a prompt on it. That way when you don’t know what to write you pick one and you have to incorporate it into your novel.  I thought it was a brilliant idea so I went with it.

I also saw on the same blog this person made another jar that had numbers on scraps of paper and when she hit 1667 words if it was still early enough she picked one of the scraps and she had to write that many more words that day. I also did that but I wasn’t as ambitious as the other person so my numbers aren’t that high. (Most of them anyway.)

MY nanowrimo jars. From left to right, daily word count dare, story sticks, words of wisdom. I’m going to work on filling the last jar in a few minutes.

Now I just have to finalize my reward system and come up with my motivation jar. (It’s going to basically be scraps of paper with motivational quotes on them). Oh and plan my novel out. There’s that minor detail that I’ve been putting off. 😉

How is your NaNoWriMo prep coming? Do you have any ideas for rewards that aren’t food. (I’ve got enough of those types).I need two more ideas. If you need any ideas for anything let me know. I’d be happy to help.

I’m Feeling Antsy

I hit my word count for the day this morning and now I feel like I should be writing because I usually write at night instead of the morning. Do any of you get that feeling or am I the only weirdo that gets like that?

So now what to write about now? I haven’t done a book update lately, but I haven’t finished any of the 3 I’m reading so I have nothing really to report about on that front. I’ve been too busy with my real and this crazy idea of writing everyday to really read a lot. (I promise I have been reading,  it’s just been a slow process).

A fellow blogger, dwightspencer71   posed the question “Why do you write?” And I promised I would get back to him once I thought of my reasons. I guess this antsy feeling is one of them, but I’ll devote a blog post to answer that question when I think of some better answers.

So I think I’ll mention how my writing itself has been going. I am absolutely loving writing short stories!  I didn’t think I was going to but I’ve already written 5ish and it’s still mid September. (I have a goal of writing one a week). Anyway, this process has proven very beneficial for me. Not only have I committed to writing everyday,  but I’ve discovered 2 novel ideas so far. There’s also something to be said about finishing a project and I feel like I’ve accomplished more than I do when I’m writing a novel. Even though it’s probably the same amount of words written.

That’s really about all I’ve got going on right now. Thanks for reading my antsy rambling!  Do you have a schedule that you try to keep with regards to your writing?  Do you feel that it helps you get in the zone? What else do you do to encourage the words?

NaNo Prep

I think I’ve finally decided what I’m going to write in November! I played around with two of my three ideas and it helped me discover the route to take.

The story I wrote last week has so much potential for me to add back story and go into more detail and as I was trying to finish it I realized that I couldn’t really end it in a way that I liked for a short story.

But just to make sure,  I wrote out the second idea that I had, just to see what I could do with it. The words came easily enough, but the story petered out around page five so I ended it.

The original idea that I was going to write is going to go on the back burner for now as I have a lot of research to do for it and I’m not really sure if I’m ready for that kind of commitment just yet.

Now I just have to organize my thoughts and my soon to be work space and I should be all set.

Are you participating in NANOWRIMO? Have you thought about what you’re going to write? If you are, good luck!  If you want a writing buddy feel free and add me and our fellow blogger jrhandleyblog   my username is mrswintheiser and his is Porkchop NCR.

I’m Not Sure What Road to Take

I started a new story yesterday, but it was going nowhere fast so I got my words in for the night and I stopped the story. (I’m up to 600 words now). Anyway, this morning I went on Pinterest and looked through my story ideas board and I found one that has potential. So much so that I might make it my NaNoWriMo project.

I know what you’re thinking, “Aren’t you using the story that you started last month but said you were saving it?” The answer is, I don’t know. Because I also came up with a new idea last week that also has potential. (I’m not sure if it has 50,000 words potential, but I could play with it and see).

Enter problem. Do I keep going with the current story and kind of cheat in November by having part of it already written, (to be fair, we’re going on vacation in November and I’m not sure if I’ll get my words in that week) do I go with my original idea, or do I try and make the idea from last week work?

Decisions, decisions. I know I have a few months yet to figure this out, but I’m a planner. It drives my husband nuts, mainly because I plan too early,  but what can I say?

What option would you pick? I’m only going to give you the prompt that I started today. Maybe one day I’ll tell you what the other two are.

My current short story. It’s also a potential NaNoWriMo project too?

Bullet Journal : Week One Update

So this past week is the first time I’ve hit my word count every day! It’s been way too long since I’ve written consistently and I love getting back into the habit again. There were a few days where I didn’t think I was going to make it, but I somehow managed it. Not only did I hit my goal of 3000 words, but I crushed it by writing 800 words more.

Motivation page. Check out the word count.

Anyway, I’ve decided to increase my word count goal by 100 every week between now and November so I can be better prepared for NANOWRIMO.

I used my “word of the week in both of the stories that I wrote this week too. (For those of you who are wondering,  it was approbation, and it means approval. Next week my word is misanthrope, which means a hater of humankind). I’m slowly building my vocabulary.

Oh, I almost forgot, I came up with a new story idea too. (It might be a novel but I haven’t really played around with it yet). I was talking to a friend of mine and he inadvertently gave me the idea. I’m not sure if I want to say what it is just yet in case it doesn’t work out.

That’s really about all I’ve got, I just wasn’t quite done writing yet but I’m between stories at the moment. I hope your week was as productive if not more so than mine was.
